Dominican Republic

Microfinance plays a critical role

The Dominican Republic is a Spanish-speaking nation located on the eastern half of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. The western side of Hispaniola is the country of Haiti. As of 2022, 21.5% of the Dominican population was living in poverty, with extreme poverty quite common in the rural areas.

According to the World Bank “disparities in access to economic opportunities and public services remain deep. Poverty rates are persistently high in rural areas, and women face disproportionate challenges nationwide.”  51% of women are unbanked in the DR, which is high when considering all Caribbean countries. We believe we can play an important role in addressing this disparity.

A new partnership – Fundación Guanín

Our partner in the DR is Fundación Centro Cultural Guanín (Fundación Guanín) which was founded by Elias Severino Hernández (Sev) in 2001. Their mission is to “cultivate a community of leaders and role models for generations to come”. Sev has a long-standing relationship with WorldWise Microfinance board member Joe Bonnell, and under Joe’s leadership, Sev agreed to create a microfinance program for members of the La Piedra community.

Fundación Guanín works with the very poor of both Dominican and Haitian ancestry in the community of LaPiedra. The foundation provides educational and health services, in addition to lending services. Several members of the board have visited LaPiedra and it is clear that the microfinance program is making a significant difference.

In 2024, the government of the Dominican Republic cracked down on Haitian immigrants and deported a large number. Unfortunately, some of those deported were participants in the loan programs, resulting in small losses to the program. Though we are discouraged by the losses, we remain committed to the Foundation and have taken steps to minimize any future losses.

Microfinance stands as one of the most promising and cost-effective tools in the fight against global poverty.
